Matthew CookI am new to painting and I work in mixed media depending on what I have available and what the piece requires. In my work I try to create a symbolism for the connections that I see in the world around me - to give a pictorial expression to something intangible.

For many years certain visions have kept nagging in my mind, becoming expressed through semi-conscious 'doodlings', bringing forth repeating archetypal shapes and patterns. I would see similar shapes and patterns in natural forms; the shapes of clouds, the veins in a leaf or a hand, the form of a wave; as well as in images from highly scientific sources such as deep space photographs of forming nebulae, or computer generated fractal patterns, electron microscope images of bodily cells and bacteria, to the trails left by exploding electrons in experiments made in particle physics; and in ancient tribal and aboriginal art forms.

I am fascinated by such dualities - the similarities in apparent opposites (ancient/modern, natural/scientific, organic/technological, chaos/order). By endeavouring to create a unique visual language to express these connections between things, I hope the viewer may form their own personal meanings with the forms I produce.
